It's winter, and the hustling crowds at best ignore her, and some are outright rude. She takes shelter and, to try to stave off the cold a bit, lights a match. It gets blown out; this happens again, then on the third try, she falls into a dream. In this dream, cherubs attend her, she gets a new doll, then a new dress. The cherubs put her on a throne. Then a storm comes, and she goes toward a candle. That candle goes out, and we see that back in the real world, so did her match and her life. An angel comes along and takes her soul. Stiff and stark sat the child there with her matches, of which one bundle had been burnt. 'She wanted to warm herself, ' people said. No one had the slightest suspicion of what beautiful things she had seen; no one even dreamed of the splendor in which, with her grandmother she had entered on the joys of a new year. Her little hands were almost numbed with cold. Oh! a match might afford her a world of comfort, if she only dared take a single one out of the bundle, draw it against the wall, and warm her fingers by it. She drew one out. 'Rischt! ' how it blazed, how it burnt! It was a warm, bright flame, like a candle, as she held her hands over it: it was a wonderful light. It seemed really to the little maiden as though she were sitting before a large iron stove, with burnished brass feet and a brass ornament at top. The fire burned with such blessed influence; it warmed so delightfully. The little girl had already stretched out her feet to warm them too; but--the small flame went out, the stove vanished: she had only the remains of the burnt-out match in her hand. She rubbed another against the wall: it burned brightly, and where the light fell on the wall, there the wall became transparent like a veil, so that she could see into the room. On the table was spread a snow-white tablecloth; upon it was a splendid porcelain service, and the roast goose was steaming famously with its stuffing of apple and dried plums.

The child stretched out her hands to them, but then the match went out. Still the lights of the Christmas tree burned higher and higher into sky until she saw one fall,, forming a long trail of fire. "Now some one is dying, " murmured the child softly, for her grandmother, the person who had loved her the most, and who was now dead, had told her that whenever a star falls a soul goes up to heaven. She struck yet another match against the wall. It lit and in its brightness her dear old grandmother appeared before her, beaming love and kindness. "Oh, grandmother, " cried the child, "take me with you. I know you will go away when the match burns out. You, too, will vanish, like the warm stove, the splendid New Year's feast, the beautiful Christmas tree. " And to make sure her grandmother would not disappear, she lit a whole bundle of the matches against the wall. And they burned with such a brilliant light that it became brighter than the midday sun. Her grandmother had never looked so grand and beautiful.

She took the little girl in her arms and both flew joyfully together, climbing higher and higher, far above the earth, away from cold and hunger, to heaven. They found her the next morning, leaning against the wall, with red cheeks and smiling mouth—frozen to death on the last evening of the old year. "She wanted to warm herself, the poor little thing, " people said. "I wonder why she looks so happy? " some people asked. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, or how happily she had gone with her grandmother into the new year. Please rate this story from 1 to 10 stars. 10 stars means you really liked it! i haven't even watched the new shows (which i really dislike) always keep them alive and never let them go Jean Renoir made beautiful films, this early one among them. Although a French production, The scene is intended to be English, and includes an English Policeman. The story is moving and ultimately sad. I have known it from childhood and the message is clear – don't go out hungry and thinly clad to sell matches on a snowy Christmas day. Like Susan E. I believe there is permanent value in this old film. It has real depth and purpose, unlike so many modern shallow efforts. Thank you for bringing it to us. I watched a movie on T. V. back in the 50's with this title, shown around Christmas time. But I do not remember if this is the same version. I just remember it was very sad like this one. I am glad I got to see this movie; it is really good. I have looked for it before but could not find it. I have always loved this little story Since my Mother told it to me many years rhaps 45 years…now I am telling it to my grandchildren who really listen and love it.

Overview This silent reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's bleak fairy tale will bring a tear to every eye. Though the surviving copy has Dutch intertitles, the moving parable of a young girl exploited by her drunkard father and left to freeze on the snowy streets needs little explanation. Much more elaborate than British cinema pioneer James Williamson's beautiful 1902 adaptation, this version was produced by the Neptune Film Company and features colour tinting and special effects to illuminate the little match girl's retreat into a world of fantasy and comfort.
