It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning just the two, but it was a watershed moment in late sixties cinema. It also helped reignite an interest in real-life 1930's gangsters, and John Milius had an idea to emulate Penn's film with his own account of bank-robber John Dillinger's time in the spotlight. Dillinger emerged in 1973, right in the middle of actor Warren Oates' purple patch of films. He… Warren Oates is Letterboxd's superstar Todd Gaines favorite actor. Based on Todd's recommendations.... I have found myself watching more Oates' movies. Dillinger is one of Oates' few starring roles that I have come across over the last year. I know I am not a Warren Oates I think his role as Dillinger might be his career highlight. In this movie we get to follow John Dillinger as he travels around the MidWest robbing backs and becoming a celebrity. Hot on his trail is Melvin Purvis (Ben Johnson). It is hard to watch this movie and not compare it to the Johnny Depp/Christain Bale Public Enemies Dillinger movie.

Well I think Public Enemies is more historically Dillinger is a much… Ready to forget Johnny Depp but still want to watch a good movie about John Dillinger? Boy, do I have good news for you... Harry Dean Stanton graced the silver screen for 6 decades with his hang dog look and effortless acting. He was the prototypical visage of Americana who occupied a strange and vast assortment of films. He had a warming presence on screen and a scathing sardonicism off of it. He was an enigma, a treasure, the ultimate everyman, and my all time favorite character actor. On this sad day of his passing, I absolutely had to watch him do his thing. Loaded with a killer cast including Harry Dean Stanton and Richard Dreyfuss, the eponymous gangster is portrayed with roguish ruggedness by Warren Oates, in a role he seems destined to play. The law is more of an ever-present nemesis than a procedural b-plot, embodied by Ben Johnson's cigar-chomping take-no-prisoners Purvis. Milius has no time for romanticizing or g-man humanity, even if he does have time for on-the-run road trips and gallows humor. The crooks are deluded and ruthless, the… Before there was Michael Mann and Public Enemy number one of woke culture Johnny Depp, there was forever snubbed master John Milius and the never shined bright star Warren Oates tackling behind the same character and story from the 20th century Robin Hood and the enemy of American justice: John Dillinger, in cinematic format right here in plain and simple named Dillinger. An unfortunate forgotten, snubbed, and HUGELLY entertaining crime gangster thriller with a complete old-fashioned spirit that showed the world of the talents of Mr. Milius behind the camera after years working as a screenwriter of discarded scripts and whose style of stories followed the most basic and romanticized concepts of the individualistic macho hero going against the system… One of the best action movies of the 70s with an incredible cast and a lot of intense shoot-outs.
