Unsurprisingly, McGonagall didn't seem phased, and even scolded Harry for putting himself in danger. Even in the path of such cruel mistreatment, McGonagall was still intent on protecting those around her. However, Harry's return seemed to ignite a fire in McGonagall, who quickly went to find her abhorred boss Snape to curtly inform him of events. Before long, a frankly awesome duel ensued between McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout and Snape, the three fellow professors chipping in to end Snape's reign once and for all.

McGonagall chimes in that "he will not be singlehanded" and plunges her hand into her robes for her wand. While Dumbledore insists Hogwarts needs her, McGonagall is willing to fight the Ministry at Dumbledore's side if necessary. It's a great moment that shows McGonagall won't quietly stand by when such injustice is happening. Then when McGonagall is discussing potential careers with Harry, she ignores all of Umbridge's interruptions other than to ask if the other woman needs a cough drop.

The movie version is slightly different, but in both book and film, it's clear that McGonagall wants Harry to be able to use his talents and wants her house to succeed. 7 years ago I think McGonagall should win this. Age and physical strength is irrelevant in a duel. So the fact that Snape is younger and physically stronger is not a factor that should be considered nor used as an argument. Dark Magic is powerful, but not even close to the strength of good magic. In the Potterverse the best argument for this is Love. Love is more powerful than anything dark magic can conjure. Lily's sacrifice for Harry causes the most powerful dark spell to backfire. McGonagall herself has fought in the first and second wizarding wars and survived both, demonstrating that she has actual experience in magical combat. She survived 4 stunning spells to the chest despite her age in fact she has survived a duel against Voldemort. Most people use the argument "Snape has dark magic" which I think is weak for a simple reason. You don't need an unforgivable curse to kill or torture someone. Snape only survives her attack by hiding behind a suit of armour. Rowling consistently demonstrates this fact in her stories based on that Snape never stood a chance against McGonagall in fact Rowling stated that McGonagall would have killed Snape if he hadn't of fled.
